EXPLORING URBAN MIGRATION IN DAVAO CITY'S CEMETERIES

Puluy-anan translates to 'home' in Bisaya, a common dialect of the southern Philippines.

This series depicts the homes and living environment of hundreds of informal settlers in Davao City, Philippines, 2016. Puluy-anan focuses on two settlements built in Maa Public Cemetery and Wireless Catholic Cemetery. Many of the settlers migrated to the city hoping for stable work. Due to contractual work that pays below minimum wage, people are forced to live in rent-free cemeteries. More information about the communities can be found here.

  • Puluy-anan (2016) was created during an artist in residency program through Rm. 74 located in Davao City, Philippines. This series was on exhibition at Rm. 74 from April-July of 2016.

  • This series was also exhibited at Tamarack Gallery in Madison, Wisconsin from March-April of 2017.

  • Puluy-anan was partially published in Docu Magazine Vol 1, Issue 6 (December, 2020).
